Ohio Regional Music Arts and Cultural Outreach brings you  A Steel Drum Celebration, The Music of Trinidad and Tobago, as the culminating concert in the Fall 2024 World Tour of Music residency with Joe Leaman and Liam Teague on steel drums, along with other regional musicians. The national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, steelpans  have made their presence felt in world music. This concert mixes jazz, classical and pop music, as well as music of the traditional Caribbean cannon. Students from the Medina County Police Activities League after-school steel drum classes will participate.

Tickets are available at Buehler’s River Styx and Forest Meadow beginning September 1, or online here  $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

VIP Tickets are available for $60.  This includes a pre-concert reception at the home of John and Lisa Burke with heavy appetizers, wine, and piano music, plus reserved seating at the concert.

About the Musicians

Joe Leaman is an in-demand percussionist, pianist, composer, arranger and educator with an active following throughout Northeastern Ohio. He has appeared as a headliner or accompanied singers and other instrumentalists in past ORMACO performances. He is also the administrator and main instructor of ORMACO’s MCPAL program, an after-school enrichment program created in partnership with the Medina County Police Activities League, providing free music lessons to students in area schools.

Liam Teague is currently Professor of Music and Head of Steelpan studies at Northern Illinois University (NIU), where he directs the renowned NIU Steelband. Hailed as the “Paganini of the Steelpan”, his commitment to demonstrating the great musical possibilities of the steelpan has taken him throughout the world, and he has received many awards from his homeland of Trinidad and Tobago, including the Humming Bird National Award (Silver) and the Ansa McAl Caribbean Award for Excellence. In 2022, The San Fernando City Council honored Teague with the Keys to the City of San Fernando, his hometown in Trinidad and Tobago. He is also the recipient of an Illinois Arts Council (IACA) 2023 Artist Fellowship Award.

Teague has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra, Taiwan National Symphony, Czech National Symphony, Saint Louis Symphony, Panama National Symphony, Chicago Sinfonietta, Vermeer String Quartet, Avalon String Quartet, Hannaford Street Silver Brass Ensemble, Nexus, and the Dartmouth Wind Ensemble. He has appeared in concert with Grammy-Award winning musicians Paquito D’Rivera, Dave Samuels, Zakir Hussain and Dame Evelyn Glennie. He has presented and performed at several Percussive Arts Society International Conventions (PASIC) and educational institutions across the globe and served as an adjudicator for many events including the International Pan Ramajay Competition and Virginia Arts Festival- PANorama Caribbean Music Festival. He served as steel band director at Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Door County, Wisconsin, and has also taught and performed at the California State University Summer Arts Camp and at the Interlochen Academy for the Performing Arts.
